Jeff Suntala

Jeff takes complex everyday scenes and paints them Plein Air
relatively quickly through simplification of form and organization.
While he does not copy a scene exactly,
he captures its essence and the resulting painting is true to its environment.
He is a Signature Member of the Ohio Watercolor Society.

  • New Gamboge (warmer yellow) DON’T BUY THE WINSOR NEWTON BRAND. THEY USE AN INFERIOR PIGMENT NOW. USE DANIEL SMITH.
  • Winsor Orange (a bright orange that's hard to achieve otherwise)
  • Scarlet Lake (warm red)
  • Alizarin Crimson (cool purplish red)
  • Opera Rose (bright pink)
  • Burnt Sienna (orange-ish brown)
  • Burnt Umber (neutral brown)
  • Raw Umber (yellow greenish brown)
  • Permanent Sap Green
  • Cobalt Blue (pure blue)
  • Cerulean blue (slightly greener blue with lots of grain)
  • Ultramarine Blue (darker version of pure blue)

    Note:

    Sketchbook or loose watercolor paper. We don’t need a sketchbook for today, as we’ll just be practicing/working on basic principles. However, the books listed below are quality sketchbooks for watercolor sketching.

    Pens (Uniball UB-150 or Uniball 207 are inexpensive waterproof pens)

    Non waterproof colored pens are fun as they bleed into the washes you put down creating a fun effect.

    Reference if you want to sketch things that you’re interested in or have taken your own photos of and would like to make it “your own” sketch. Otherwise we’ll have some photos ready for use. iPad or tablet or smartphone to use to sketch from as well
